Kylie Minogue is an Australian singer, recording artist, songwriter, showgirl and actress. After beginning her career as a child actress on Australian television, she achieved recognition through her role in the television soap opera Neighbours, before commencing her career as a recording artist in 1987. Minogue has achieved worldwide record sales of more than 68 million, and has received notable music awards, including multiple ARIA and Brit Awards and a Grammy Award. Kylie Minogue has been described as a ‘perfect gay icon’, which she encourages with comments such as “I am not a traditional gay icon. There’s been no tragedy in my life, only tragic outfits and hair” and “My gay audience has been with me from the beginning… They kind of adopted me.” She has said she felt “very touched” to have such an “appreciative crowd” and this had encouraged her to perform at gay venues throughout the world, as well as headlining in the 1994 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Kylie will also be performing at the 2012 Sydney Mardi Gras.

The Sydney Mardi Gras is an annual LGBTQI pride parade and festival in Sydney, and draws in thousands of visitors from around Australia and overseas. It is one of the largest such festivals in the world, which sees 70,000 people dress up for the celebrations. The costumes are always bright and colourful, usually involve feather headdresses, sometimes theatrical wings, and are either skin-tight or show lots of skin! There are often lots of angels at the mardi gras parade, as there are devils, but you can’t go wrong with a showgirl costume for a mardi gras costume!
