“If only I had a heart…”

In the novels by L. Frank Baum, the origins of the Tin Man character are quite gruesome. Originally an ordinary man by the name of Nick Chopper, the Tin Woodman used to make his living chopping down trees in the forests of Oz. The Wicked Witch of the East enchanted his axe to prevent him from marrying the girl that he loved. The enchanted axe chopped off his limbs, one by one. Each time he lost a limb, Nick Chopper replaced it with a prosthetic limb made of tin. Finally, nothing was left of him but tin. However, the tinsmith who helped him, neglected to replace his heart. Once Nick Chopper was made entirely of tin, he was no longer able to love the girl he had fallen for.

In The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Dorothy befriends the Tin Woodman and he follows her to the Emerald to get a heart from The Wizard of Oz. They are joined on their adventure by the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion. The Tin Woodman states unequivocally that he has neither heart nor brain, but cares nothing for the loss of his brain. His desire for a heart notably contrasts with the Scarecrow’s desire for brains, reflecting a common debate between the relative importance of the mind and the emotions. As they continue in their quest, they discover the Wizard to be a “humbug” and can only provide a placebo heart made of velvet and filled with sawdust. However, this is enough to please the Tin Woodman, who, with or without a heart, was all along the most tender and emotional of Dorothy’s companions; just as the Scarecrow was the wisest and the Cowardly Lion the bravest.

The Rocky Horror Show is a long-running British horror comedy stage musical, which opened in London in 1973. It was written by Richard O’Brien, and developed by Jim Sharman. It came eighth in a BBC Radio 2 listener poll of the “Nation’s Number One Essential Musicals”. It tells the story of a newly engaged couple looking for Dr Everett, but who become stranded during a rainstorm. They must seek refuge at the strange old castle of Dr. Frank Furter, who give them a place to stay for the night. Dr. Frank reveals he has discovered the secret to life itself, and unveils his creation, Rocky Horror, who is brought to life.

As the night goes on, the story becomes twisted and dark. This weird and wonderful story has become hugely popular, and its brightly coloured and scary costumes make for a great fancy dress party! To achieve Dr. Frank’s look, use white face make up with dark eyes and bright lips, paired with pearls, a black leather corset and thigh high black boots. The Sydney Mardi Gras is an annual LGBTQI pride parade and festival in Sydney, and draws in thousands of visitors from around Australia and overseas. It is one of the largest such festivals in the world, which sees 70,000 people dress up for the celebrations. The costumes are always bright and colourful, usually involve feather headdresses, sometimes theatrical wings, and are either skin-tight or show lots of skin! She was named the twentieth greatest comic book character by Empire magazine. In May of 2011, Wonder Woman placed 5th on IGN’s Top 100 Comic Book Heroes of All Time.

The Muppets are a group of puppet characters created by ‘The Muppeteer’ legend Jim Henson, starting in 1954-55. They are distinguished from ventriloquist dummies, which are typically animated only in the head and face, in that their arms or other features are also mobile and expressive. They are also presented as being independent of the puppeteer, who is usual not visible – hidden behind a set or outside of the camera frame. Using the camera frame as the ‘stage’ was an innovation of the Muppets. Famous Muppets from ‘The Muppet Show’ include Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and Beaker.
